Susan (Suzzy) Canny was born in Staten Island, New York to a military couple. She was the eldest child in a large family that traveled throughout the U.S. and to a U.S. Army base near Bad Kreuznach, Germany.
As a child, Suzzy found pleasure in reading and daydreaming of beautiful dresses, and watching movies, fascinated by the costumes. Suzzy’s mother was the daughter of a fine seamstress and the granddaughter of a German master tailor. She designed and sewed lovely dresses for her firstborn daughter. When Suzzy’s six brothers and sisters arrived, however, her mother reluctantly put away her sewing machine to tend to her family. It was only fitting when Suzzy, at the age of eleven and half, asked if she could sew a shirt. Her mother told her to purchase the fabric and a pattern and she would teach her how to sew. That was the beginning of a lifelong passion. The tradition continued when Suzzy, as a young mother, made all her daughters’ clothes and also designed apparel for herself and her siblings.
Suzzy moved with her first husband from Texas to California where she raised three beautiful children and now dotes on four grandchildren who are the “lights of her heart.”
Many years of sewing not only for her family but also for friends led Suzzy to become an expert seamstress. A lifelong student of home economics, she is now an accomplished custom seamstress providing dressmaking, alterations, repurposing, and more. Suzzy officially started her own business, Suzzy Canny, Custom Seamstress in January 2014, and enjoys working with fabrics that mold to and flatter the body. She favors Asian silks, elegant Asian designs, and flowing fabrics as well as pure cotton and tulle. Her bespoke creations have been worn and enjoyed by family and friends for many years.
In 1994, Suzzy married her muse and creative partner, Thomas Canny, the “love of her life.” Thomas is a gifted digital artist and Suzzy consults him regularly for his color and artistic eye. They reside in the San Fernando Valley in the Greater Los Angeles area where they have a studio.
